GoCruisewithJane in the 60's

I know that my insight into P&O cruising during the 1960’s with P&O cruises is very popular with you. You might recall in my last post in the series, posted on 3rd December, I recalled some of my memories from the Orcades in 1968 and took you back to my time spent in the playroom onboard. Remember the see-saws I spoke about on the open deck adjoining the playroom? Well standby to be amazed…….

Never seen before footage of me playing in those very see-saws. Wowsers! They looked fun!!! There is also quite good footage of the ‘Tourist class’ pool area….and they talk about Ventura being cramped on the sun deck?! If only some knew what we had to endure back then. I have to say that everyone looks very regimented, sitting in their upright chairs, in rows, around the pool. Looks like my Dad had quite a struggle battling his way back to me with my ice cold orange squash, and note what a good girl I was, and waited very patiently with straw in hand, while he handed it to me. We didnt have the luxury of lie flat sun beds either, just proper ‘deck’ chairs like those you would see on the prom at the seaside. Oh happy days, it did feel all so very posh back in the olden days. My kids are  amazed that we had colour in the 60’s, as they are convinced that everything was Black and white back then!

I would love to hear your comments, and thoughts about this amazing cine film that has recently come to light. Keep checking back because I have a few more to share with you, and plenty of memories.

Oh Jane – it looks just like Carry on Cruising LOL – I can’t believe how packed the decks were. What a fantastic piece of film – bet you were really pleased to see that – got any more? I love looking at the old stuff and seeing how things have changed. What was with the matching flowery tabards – very 60’s 🙂

Denise – Those tabards were pretty cool hey? Im thinking of recreating them for my next cruise 🙂 Ive got some more films of me onboard Orcades, and some of me on Canberra in the 70’s, and I think there is some of me on old Oriana. Keep checking back for more films and my memories from the 60’s & 70’s

Hi Jane I came accross your site by accident I googled orcades.
I returned to England in 1969 with my parents I was 11 years old and old enough to remember lots. We left adelaide with thousands of colourful streamers. I particuarly enjoyed the breakfast .The tables were white linen and if it was your birthday (which it was) the decorated the table with streamers.I felt so special, best birthday ever. The waiters looked so exotic dressed in white and mum and dad always enjoyed a cuo of tea in the cabin everymornig bought in by the cabin steward. Its seemed so luxurious
    thanks again
    steve

Stephen – It all sounds very familiar and I can rember the streamers, which continued up until the 80’s. Sadly they are no more, and sailaways from Southamton are not quite the same with flag waving! I can remember the waiters with their starched white uniforms and blue plaited braid on their shoulders. As you say, very smart.
I used to love the sound of the stewards coming down the corridors with trays of tea in the morning – I knew it was nearly time to get up then 🙂 The oragnge juice was an aquired taste and always found the pineapple juice to be more palletable. Happy days 🙂

    Hi Jane,
I emigrated to Australia with my family on the Orcades in 1967.
Your film brought back many happy memories. In the childrens club with my brother playing snakes and ladders and the swimming pool. I wish that my dad had a movie camera when we were there.
Thank you for sharing your wonderful memories.
